Dear all,
Please I need advice about a service that I should start it manually
each time I need to attach a removable media under Solaris 10 x86
machine.
/usr/sbin/vold -f /etc/vold.conf

Is the service currently enabled?
# svcs -l svc:/system/filesystem/volfs:default

Hi Happy,

Strange. Did your system return nothing for this command:

# pkgchk -l -p /lib/svc/method/svc-volfs
Pathname: /lib/svc/method/svc-volfs
Type: regular file
Expected mode: 0555
Expected owner: root
Expected group: bin
Expected file size (bytes): 2295
Expected sum(1) of contents: 51328
Expected last modification: Jan 16 13:07:35 2007
Referenced by the following packages:
        SUNWvolr
Current status: installed

Do you get any errors with this command:

# pkgchk -l SUNWvolr

If you do, I would retry removing this pkg and reinstalling it
from a good known source.

Thanks,

Cindy

What restrictions should I concern about installation when I get that
package ? Should I follow /etc/release version ? Of course it will be
Solaris 10 but I am not quite sure about the release ?
Can I get that package SUNWvolr directly from the DVD solaris 10
installation ?
Should I remove the old one ?

Yes I did not get any results from executing these commands :
#svcs -a | grep vol
# pkgchk -l -p /lib/svc/method/svc-volfs

Does the file exist? What's the output of a simple
ls -l /lib/svc/method/svc-volfs? Or sum /lib/svc/method/svc-volfs?

For that matter, what release are you running, from /etc/release?

And what is the output from "pkgchk -l SUNWvolr | grep Pathname"?

Hi Happy

Your output above doesn't look good. Mine looks like this:

# ls -l /lib/svc/method/svc-volfs
-r-xr-xr-x 1 root bin 2295 Jan 16 2007 /lib/svc/method/
svc-volfs

Something is wrong with this package and I think you should reinstall
it,
possibly even both of these packages:

# pkginfo -l | grep SUNWvol*
   PKGINST: SUNWvolr
   PKGINST: SUNWvolu

The pkgrm dialogue will warn if these packages are removing any
critical
packages, but I don't think they have any critical dependencies.

You might also check to see if anything else is missing on this system
to make sure you don't have a larger problem of stuff disappearing.

You will need to find the media or a pkg server that contains this
pkg.

The /etc/release file is in the SUNWsolnm pkg, which you can see here:

$ grep /etc/release /var/sadm/install/contents
/etc/release f none 0444 root sys 243 15973 1253141226 SUNWsolnm

I think you can cat this file on the media to make sure it matches
what
you are running. I don't have any media but something like this:

$ cat /cdrom/sol_10_811_sparc/Solaris_10/Product/SUNWsolnm/reloc/etc/
release

This system is also running an old Solaris 10 release. You might
consider upgrading it.

Thanks,

Cindy
