Any Ultra Sparc system over 200MHz. Ie. basiclly the Ultra 5 will be
the minimum. This should be dropping off support of sun4m and Ultra 1
and the very earliest Ultra 2 systems.

The SPARC version will run on machines with UltraSPARC II, III, and IV
series CPUs (and various Fujitsu models as well, though I don't know the
details off the top of my head). The only UltraSPARC's that Solaris 9
runs on that Solaris 10 dropped support for are the UltraSPARC I cpu's.

VMware doesn't list it as a supported OS, but I
successfully installed S10_b51 under the latest VMware,
running under Red Hat 9 Linux.
It wouldn't boot with the virtual machine's CD assigned to
one of the system CD drives, so I had to assign the CD to
the software 1 of 2 CD iso image.
I didn't get video working though.

Did you install the xfree86 4.4.0 video porting kit drivers
<URL:http://www.tools.de/solaris/>?
It includes the vmware video driver.

I wish Sun would support Solaris within VMware (Solaris has "guest" OS)
and Solaris as "server" ("host" OS; this would require to port the Linux
or the FreeBSD VMware kernel module to Solaris... that option may be a
great advantage for Solaris x86 since it would have both "zones" and a
full VM).

Then you should go fill out the form at:
http://wwws.sun.com/software/solaris/10/inquiry.jsp
so the people in Sun who work with ISV's know what you want (and how
many people want it - I'm sure they know some people want VMware, but
the people more that ask, the higher priority they're likely to give it).

All wishes for Solaris support in VMware (as guest or host) should
be directed at EMC of course. I'm sure Sun would cooperate, but it's
EMC that has to have the initiative, which of course are driven by
market requirements, which lead in nicely to Alan's point.
