Hi

Unfortunately I cannot upgrade this box and ideally would not install
anything onto it, so if possible I'm looking for a way of allowing an
XDMCP (ref X or something similar) connection to it - at the moment
it's refusing connections (it is contactable over the network).

I would like to know if it's possible to make this work by just making
a configuration change to the X setup? (I have limited packages
installed - see below).

If I have to install CDE, can anyone advise the latest compatible
version?

It looks like you have no X packages at all and would at least need 
to install them.  You could get xdmcp support via xdm if you don't want
to install CDE.  (I don't remember the 2.5.1 package breakdown, but if
for 2.6 and later you would need at least SUNWxwplt SUNWxwfnt SUNWxwopt
and some of the fonts packages.)
