How does the OS find the new device's driver?

When adding a new device to the system, how does the OS find the
appropriate driver for the device?
I hope you answer this question on two aspects:
1 if the driver has been intalled, how does the OS do?
2 if the driver has not been intalled, how does the OS do?

I beg your answers.
Thanks!

    a) the bus driver reads the bus-specific device data, builds a PnP ID
string and reports it to PnP
    b) kernel-mode PnP creates an in-registry devnode for the device - or
reuses the existing one
    c) if the devnode was not existing and was created by PnP just now - then
kernel mode PnP asks user-mode PnP to install the device
    d) user-mode PnP scans the already installed INF files for the given PnP
ID.
    e) if not found - then user-mode PnP transfers control to the admin user
shell, which asks the user to point at the INF/SYS files for the device.

RFID's Security Problem Are U.S. passport cards and new state driver's licenses with RFID truly secure? By Erica Naone Technology Review January/February 2009 Starting this summer, Americans will need passports to travel to Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and the Caribbean--unless they have passport cards or one of the enhanced driver's licenses that the states of Washington and New York have begun to issue. Valid only for trips by land and sea, these new forms of identification are a convenient, inexpensive option for people who don't need to travel by plane...

Ever since the device's unveiling last January, the tech world has been running in circles asking what the iPhone will be like, what it will do, and how it will do it. But because Apple hasn't been the leakiest of faucets when it comes to specs, the hype has resulted in a lot of speculation instead. Of course, that will all change in several days, as you can be sure everyone lucky...

Prob's using Albert Kallal's SetDefaultPrinter on some OS's
I'm using Albert Kallall's code to set printers in A97. I find that on some machines, the code locks up and on others, it does not. I would like to overcome this and was wondering about the experiences of others who attempt to set default printer in A97? I have an app running on an XP home edition box fine. Same app running on XP Professional fails when SetDefaultPrinter() is called. I can post more of the code, which may be found at http://www.members.shaw.ca/AlbertKallal/msaccess/printch97.zip but I did not wish to clutter the post with too much that may distract from the question...
