auto-upgrading KDE

  • Follow

I'm running KDE 3.1.4-5 on Fedora Core 1 at the moment. I've installed a
bunch of updates for my base system and other software using a combination
of apt and Synaptic (a front-end for apt), and was wondering if it'd be
possible to upgrade to KDE 3.2.x the same way?

If so, what would be a good repository to use? What about any dependancies?

Be careful I did exactly this last night and found I got KDE 3.2.
installed just fine but it klled Gnome and also some apps and applets.

Any chance you could help out with the following? I get it regardless of
which repository I use, or something similar, at any rate.

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
kde: PreDepends: themer (>= 0:1.50) but it is not installable
kdebase: Depends: libsensors.so.1 but it is not installable
PreDepends: themer (>= 0:1.50) but it is not installable
kdelibs: Depends: /etc/xdg/menus/applications.menu but it is not
          installable
Depends: hicolor-icon-theme but it is not installable
Depends: libjasper-1.701.so.1 but it is not installable
Depends: redhat-menus (>= 1.4) but 0.40-1 is to be installed
qt: PreDepends: themer (>= 0:1.50) but it is not installable
        E: Broken packages

I get the unmet dependencies, but what about the "is not installable" part?
I was under the impression that apt was supposed to take care of that sort
of thing automatically. Do I need to add more servers to the list for a
complete collection?

Just one other newbie thing... Where can I get an explanation of what the
various directories on the servers mean? For example:

ftp://apt.unl.edu/apt/kde-redhat contains directories called 1, 1.92, 2,
3.0, etc.

Are these Red Hat version numbers? I mean, they go as high as 9. But I
can't see running KDE 3.2 on RedHat 1. At first I thought they were KDE
version numbers, but they go too high, and all the directories contain
pretty much the same files. So which one would someone running Fedora 1
use?

I guess once I get that straight, and figure out why apt/synaptic refuse to
install, I'll be good to go.

It seems that the numbers are a mix of Redhat and Fedora -versions.
1,1.92,2 are Fedora Core X (1.92 is a testing release of Core 2),
7.3,8,9 seems to be Redhat X.

3? Fedora Core 3? ;) I don't know.

For FC1 the directory called "1" should be your choice.

Your apt/yum is misconfigured, so it can't properly find the required
dependancies.

Compare your setup against the template posted on
http://kde-redhat.sourceforge.net/

No, RH Enterprise 3

I originally copied that into my apt directory, but edited out all the
entries that seemed to be related to Red Hat Enterprise. There was
only one line that seemed to be specific to Fedora, and the URL's
broken. Maybe I'll try again with the full file and see if it makes a
difference.

I just wanted to say thanks for the tip. I went through my apt source list
and made sure all the links pointed to directories that were applicable to
my install, and the program downloaded all the files that I picked.

Once the download was finished, a new problem seems to have popped up. I
keep getting the following message:

        unknown signature /var/cache/apt/archives/filename.rpm

where filename.rpm is whatever package apt is complaining about at the time.

As far as I've been able to find out, it means I don't have the right GPG
keys for the servers I'm downloading from. Or something like that, I
think. How would I go about installing them?

I'm using apt.kde-redhat.org, if that helps any. I can't find anything
about keys on the FTP site.

So... Thanks to everyone for their help so far. I'm really starting to
like this method of updating. It beats downloading and installing
individual RPMs and worrying about dependancies.

I think I may have found the key...

Nope... same problem...

Sorry about all these posts. I'm just finding this a bit frustrating, is
all.

Goto
http://sf.net/projects/kde-redhat/

Download the key from the "Files" section, and import into rpm via:
rpm --import <gpg-key-file>

That's exactly the key I thought I'd found. When I tried importing it
originally, I got an error telling me the file didn't exist. I'll try
it again later today, but I fear I'll be stuck using KDE 3.1 forever

Well, it works. Thanks to everyone for your help.

My K-Menu even looks normal. :)

7.3, 8.0, and 9 are Red Hat; 1 and 2 are Fedora Core. Apt should be
configured to use the one for your release.
