Commercial Users of Functional Programming: program is published, registration is open

[posted on behalf of the organizers]

Friends,

The program for the 2007 Commercial Users of Functional Programming
workshop is now published.

        http://cufp.galois.com/

The workshop is co-located with ICFP, and will be held in Freiburg,
Germany, on 4 October 2007. We had a terrific response to our call for
talks, and there are twelve (!) speakers describing commercial
applications, variously written in
        Caml
        Erlang
        F#
        Haskell
        ML
        Scheme

The talks are informal, and there are no proceedings. We'll just have
fun learning about functional programming used to solve real problems.
Do come!

von neumann programing lang; functional-level programing
Ok, today's Wikipedia learned me few things. One is the term =E2=80=9Cvon neumann programnig lang=E2=80=9D http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Von_Neumann_programming_languages effectively, that's those of C, C++, Java, sh, perl and the bunch of garbage to no ends. In short, =E2=80=9Cvon neumann programnig lang=E2=80=9D are those modeled o= n computer hardware. Namely, storage, control flow. (thus the bunch of garbage such as memory address, pointers, file handle, (and, lisp's cons)) I find the discovery of this term very illuminating. I used to use pages of words to describe the low-...

Program or be Programmed
http://www.rushkoff.com/program-or-be-programmed/ The debate over whether the Net is good or bad for us fills the airwaves and the blogosphere. But for all the heat of claim and counter-claim, the argument is essentially beside the point: it's here; it's everywhere. The real question is, do we direct technology, or do we let ourselves be directed by it and those who have mastered it? ?Choose the former,? writes Rushkoff, ?and you gain access to the control panel of civilization. Choose the latter, and it could be the last real choice you get to make.? ...

Commercial Users of Functional Programming Workshop (CUFP) 2011 Call for Presentations: http://cufp.org/2011-call-presentations Sponsored by SIGPLAN Co-located with ICFP 2011 Tokyo, Japan Sep 22-24 Proposal Submission Deadline 15 June 2011 Functional programming languages have been a hot topic of academic research for over 35 years, and they have seen an ever larger practical impact in settings ranging from tech startups to financial firms to biomedical research labs. At the same time, a vigorous community of programmers employing functional languages has come into existence. CUFP is designed to serve this community. The annual CUFP workshop is a place where people can see how others are using functional programming to solve real world problems; where practitioners meet and collaborate; where language designers and users can share ideas about the future of their favorite language; and where one can learn practical techniques and approaches for putting functional programming to work. # Giving a CUFP Talk If you have experience using functional languages in a practical setting, we invite you to submit a proposal to give a talk at the workshop. We're looking for two kinds of talks: *Experience reports* are typically 25 minutes long, and aim to inform participants about how functional programming plays out in real-world applications, focusing especially on lessons learned and insights gained. Experience reports don't need to b...

Recently, however, developers in industrial, governmental, and open-source projects have begun to use functional programming successfully in practical applications. In these settings, functional programming has often provided dramatic leverage, including whole new ways of thinking about the original problem. The goal of the CUFP workshop is to act as a voice for these users of functional programming. The workshop supports the increasing viability of functional programming in the commercial, governmental, and open-source space by providing a forum for professionals to share their experiences and ideas, whether those ideas are related to business, management, or engineering. Commercial Users of Functional Programming Workshop 2005
Apologies for multiple postings; please forward to potentially interested parties ] CUFP 2005 THE SECOND COMMERCIAL USERS OF FUNCTIONAL PROGRAMMING WORKSHOP Talinn, Estonia September 24th 2005 Co-located with ICFP Functional languages have been under academic development for over 25 years, and are still proving to be very fertile ground for programming language research. Consequently, most of the development focus of these languages is driven by academic and theoretical questions. More recently, however, functional languages have been very successfully used in commercial, industrial, and government settings, where their advantages have been able to be leveraged dramatically. The goal of CUFP is to act as a voice for commercial users of functional programming languages and technology. It aims to help functional programming become increasingly viable as a technology for use in the commercial, industrial, and government space, by providing a forum for FP professionals to share their experiences and ideas, whether business, management or engineering. It also aims to enable the formation and cementing of relationships and alliances that further the commercial use of functional languages. Providing user feedback to language designers and implementors is not a primary goal of the workshop, though it will be welcome if it occurs. Program plans ------------- The mee...

Any suggestions? hmmmm I can only suggest a manual shut down of all your programs with Cntr Alt Del (just shut them down one by one) then install your software. I am running 98 and don't get this problem so maybe this is not the best advice:-) kevin > > thanks, > MJH mhodkin@comcast.net (mjh) wrote in news:c2486ecf.0307031345.4b822902 @posting.google.com: > I'm looking for an app that shuts down all running Windows (XP) > programs and other processes in preparation for installing new > software. Giving a CUFP Talk ================== If you have experience using functional languages in a practical setting, we invite you to submit a proposal to give a talk at the workshop. We are looking for both experience reports and in-depth technical talks. Experience reports are typically 25 minutes long (but negotiable), and aim to inform participants about how functional programming plays out in real-world applications, focusing especially on lessons learned and insights gained. Experience reports don't need to be highly technical; reflections on the commercial, management, or software engineering aspects are, if anything, more important.
